which area in Paris

Which area in Paris has more to see and do Latin Quarter or Eiffel Tower? Which has better night life for the 20 something year olds. Any suggestions about these 2 areas would be greatly appreciated. Our first time in Paris and we only have a day and a half to spend so... Thanks for the suggestions.

Latin Qtr. by a long shot. The Eiffel Tower area is residential and a bit stuffy, everything pretty much closes down at night.

The Bastille area is another fun area for the 20%26#39;s

Definitely with Phread, don%26#39;t book a room around the Eiffel Tower. For 20%26#39;s, I would choose Bastille, or even rue d%26#39;Oberkampf, near République, where there are lots of bars and clubs.

I agree with the poster who said Oberkampf area - based on an early 20 something acquaintance who spent three months in Paris about a year ago. This hotel is in the area, has good reviews and is well priced if you dont already have accommodation

I%26#39;ll go with Oberkampf over Bastille.

hmmm.....sorry for reviving an old post, but could some of the locals give me a hand here (Irish, phread, Faux, travelnutty, KDKSAIL, Bob Saccameno and others):

Due to insanely cheap airplane fares I am going to Paris from 22nd till 27th October with my 73-year old mum and her 68-old friend (also a widow with an appetite for adventure).

We shall be staying in the budget hotel %26quot;Grand Hotel de l%26#39;Avenue%26quot; - the ol%26#39;girls in a twin room, me in a single. It is in Rue Rampon between Oberkampf and Republique - an area I must admit never really to have explored closely (except for Canal Saint Martin and Rue Faubourg du Temple, which are both to the north).

I remember Place de la Republique as crazily trafficed (I once stayed close by, in the upper end of Blvd Voltaire) - but I don%26#39;t recall small charming eateries that you would to bring 2 senior ladies to ??

Is the area really for teens and twenties only ?

and Truffaut: your opinion and advice is HIGHLY welcome as well ! (I suspect you to know your whereabouts as to wineing-and-dining)

Gitte, there are days when I%26#39;d cut off my arm to be able to slip over to Au C%26#39;Amelot not too far from République. The cooking is superb. The chef prepares only one menu each day, so you%26#39;ll eat what he%26#39;s in the mood to cook. That can be problematic if there are a lot of foods that you can%26#39;t/won%26#39;t eat, but everything I%26#39;ve had there has been excellent. It%26#39;s mostly a neighborhood crowd and reservations are essential. Also, Le Petit Pamphlet at 15 rue Saint Gilles isn%26#39;t too far away. Ditto the excellent cooking, but there are several choices for each course. There is also supposed to be a very good restaurant on rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, but I%26#39;ve not been there and the name escapes me.

Hi Gitte, I don%26#39;t know any of the cafes or restaurants as I have only walked around Place de la Republique and to the canal and last year we went for a walk around rue Oberkampf. I haven%26#39;t been in the area at night but it did not seem especially packed with young people in the daytime (not like walking near a university campus for example). I really liked the area on the other side of Bd du Temple near rue Charlot and rue de Bretagne, which is only about 200 metres from your hotel. I like this site for an overview of that area near your hotel

Dear ertraveler

Around Eifel its pretty dead, I stay close, mostly old ladies with purple dogs;) Latin is much better then. Do your choices only stand between these two?

Are you gay or straight, what kind of nightlife do you enjoy etc and hopefully I can be of some help=) Im 23 myself btw and I love partying!=D

Best Regards

Emma

I second the idea that you drop Eiffel Tower !

I never actually liked Bastille, and I find Oberkampf to be outdated now (save for the brunch au Charbon). The trendiness wave is going north-east, with Canal Saint-Martin as the main artera (but avoid chez Prune by all means!). Have a drink%26amp;party at the Point Ephémère, now that _is_ trendy !

GitteK : I would highly recommand l%26#39;Hôtel du Nord, quai de Jemmapes.
