We%26#39;re visiting PG next week and we were looking to hire a little boat , say a dinghy or dory type with outboard but can only find one hire shop which is really expensive at PG . Has anyone got a recommendation for one or even an address for a shop where one could buy such a thing as the rental rates are nearly what we think it would cost to buy such a boat .
Thanks and sorry about the obscure question !

Sorry, can%26#39;t help but I have been trying to find somewhere to buy a small %26#39;sit on top%26#39; canoe in Nice or somewhere close by. These are available all over the UK but I have drawn a blank on the Riviera so far. Any number of places will sell me a £20 million motor yacht but I am approx £21 million short for that. Seems very odd that I can buy what I want in London or Birmingham but not in Nice.
I would be most grateful for any advice. Otherwise I will buy in London and send to Villefranche.

We were in Port Grimaud a fortnight ago and although i don%26#39;t know the cost, there were plenty of small boats for hire. I don%26#39;t think it could have been very expensive as there seemed to be plenty of people using them.

Water sports are currently in vogue in France and boat rentals are available widely. The problem of course is the price. In a technical sense, a permit is required to pilot a motorized boat (not sailing vessels) of any size (unless you own the craft in which case licensing requirements are the same as those in your native country). There are certain situations where an operator may rent to an unlicensed individual but certain rules apply (travel is restricted, boat size and horsepower may be restricted). The end result of all of these formalities is that it is expensive to rent a boat.
Accordingly, I believe that wherever you go, rental pricing is high and though it may be possible to find a really good deal, it%26#39;s not probable.

Thank you to all who kindly replied . It makes sense now - we know what these things cost to buy in England hence our surprise at rental rates at PG. We also know that you don%26#39;t need a licence for dinghies with outboard and a few very small ( low ) powered boats. Had I done the research earlier I suspect I would have bought, shipped and brought back home or given to pals down there!
