We currently have a room booked at Le Maquis outside of Ajaccio, but after a little more research it seems as though the more beautiful part of the island is Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio. We like laying by th epool or beach during the day, maybe a little shopping and then hitting some cafes or bars. Can anyone shed a little light on where we really should be staying? Thanks!

Well it%26#39;s a bit late now you%26#39;ve booked! The hotel is one of the most expensive on Corsica - you can read reviews on this site - and is quite isolated. I hope you%26#39;ve booked a hire car (an automatic might be problematical). There is a beach and swimming pools at the hotel, but no shops, bars etc.
I would certainly not agree that Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio are the most beautiful part of the island. Beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, but there are many other parts of the island which are equally or more beautiful.
For a short trip to explore some real Corsican scenery (and the narrow twisting roads!) try the Gorges du Prunelli. From Ajaccio airport, take the N196 eastwards to Cauro, then the D27 towards Bastelica. Turn left on the D3 to Tolla and the Col de Mercujo. Cafe and viewpoint here. Keep on the same road to return to Ajaccio via Bastelicaccia.
For a day trip, Cargese, Piana, Les Calaches and Porto are not too far.

If you%26#39;re not committed to your Hotel for your whole stay, then I would consider moving on from Ajaccio (which has history, and isn%26#39;t ugly, but isn%26#39;t the most beautiful). It wouldn%26#39;t be too much hassle to move on to a different base.
Good bases would be Cargese to the North from whence you can get to the beaches and of the West coast and the landscape up to Porto (don%26#39;t go beyond - see other threads about the road to Calvi).
Or South, based in Propriano and the area which has beaches and beauty and something of the cafe culture. Bonifacio and Porto Vecchio would be easy days out. From both you could strike inland on day trips to Corte.
I%26#39;m presuming that if you%26#39;re flop-by-the-pool people you wouldn%26#39;t want the other alternative which is to stay in a number of places. moving on each time.

I certainly don%26#39;t agree that Bonifacio and Porto Vecchio are the most beautiful part of the island. There are a few gorgeous ( but incredibly crowded in summer) Caribbean style beaches along there, and the hills inland are worthwhile, but generally it is my least favourite part of the island. I thought Porto Vecchio had little charm and the coastal road was quite scruffy.

After finding 10p return flights with Thomson (£78 with charges and tax!) to Figari, we were looking for somewhere not too far from the airport (e.g. Bonifacio / Porto Vecchio) but a lot of places are booked up now.
