Hello:
I will be staying in Nice for 2.5 days and need some help choosing the best coastal towns to visit. My mom will be with me and she wants to go to Monaco (although I%26#39;ve heard it%26#39;s mostly tourists). I thought since we would be in that area, we could visit Eze and Menton. After reading some of the other posts, maybe going to Antibes would be better??
Looking for old towns, beautiful gardens, great local food (family-owned restaurants)...
No car...we will be taking public transportation. According to the posts, this seems to be the way to go!
Any advice would be wonderful! (I%26#39;m leaving for France on 8/19/06)

Eze Village is very nice with great views from the jardin exotic at the top of the Medieval Village. There%26#39;s a bus from NIce, I don%26#39;t remember the number but you can inquire at the main bus station in Nice. I haven%26#39;t been to Menton so I can%26#39;t comment on that. Given a choice between Antibes and Monaco, it depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. Antibes has a nice old town and the Picasso museum is very nice but I think it might be closed this year for renovation. The views are good from Monaco Ville but I do think it%26#39;s more touristy than Antibes. If you%26#39;re looking for a good beach, the beaches at Juan les Pains, right next to Antibes are sandy and very nice. I wasn%26#39;t wild about Monte Carlo. Last year we took the tourist train from Monaco Ville to Monte Carlo and that was good enough to get a look at the Casino and the Hotel de Paris. Monte Carlo is a little too high end for my tastes.
Have a wonderful visit. Nice is great. Make sure you go to the top of the Castle Hill in Nice. You%26#39;ll get great views of Nice and the park is really nice.

m%26amp;m56,
Thank you so much for the info - that helps tremendously!

Why not head in both directions? To the west of Nice lie Antibes, Cannes, the very old towns of Vence and St-Paul-de-Vence; to the east is the peninsula of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, where you will find the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, with its seven different gardens and the house filled with objets d%26#39;art, furniture, and beautiful carpets. I wouldn%26#39;t put Mention on the list, simply because it%26#39;s farther east and with 2.5 days you won%26#39;t have all that much time. I don%26#39;t find Eze all that terrific--the views from St-Jean are just as good, and it%26#39;s easier to reach. Monaco is Monaco...very clean, very expensive, very uninteresting, in my opinion.

I did like St. Paul de Vence very much. The modern art museum outside of town is great, with really good outside scultpures. And at the top of the town is a beautiful cemetary with beautiful views. Underhill is right about St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Highly, higly recommended for the gorgeous gardens and views of the Mediterranean. If you go, have lunch in the tea room. Great memory for me.

Make sure to reserve a table in The Villa Ephrussi tea-room; places are hard to come by otherwise, although there%26#39;s a pleasant outdoor patio. It lacks the superb view, though, and can be quite warm.

%26quot;Why not head in both directions?%26quot;
Underhill: are you suggesting doing all of this in one day (forgive my ignorance here) or east one day and west the next? I%26#39;m trying to get a good understanding of how long it will take for the excursions...
Will definitely call ahead and make reservations for the Tea Room! Thanks for the tip!

Yes: both directions, one day east (St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat , Eze-village, and Monaco), one half-day west for Antibes. Spend the rest of the time in Nice! It%26#39;s a wonderful place to wander in; be sure to visit the Cours Saléya for the open-air market and Vieux Nice, the shaded old town with narrow, winding streets.
You might want to think about Eze, as you can get only part way by train and then will need to switch to a bus to go up and up the hill. What Eze has is mostly a great view--there%26#39;s not much to the village itself, and since you have limited time I%26#39;d vote for skipping Eze and adding the time to Cap Ferrat.
