We are driving 555 miles from Calais to Cahors and need to find an overnight stop. Does anyone know what Chateauroux or Vierzon are like?

What%26#39;s Bourges like anyone?

Of course, exeman, a lot depends on when you start your journey from Calais, if you have to factor in the journey from Exeter to Calais as part of that day%26#39;s driving, and if you have a decent car. That said, you can cover huge distances in France very quickly - last May we started out from Calais at 8am and were checking into our first night%26#39;s stop south of Limoges by 3pm. While a lot also depends on traffic conditions around the the Paris Orbital, Cahors in one day would have been a doddle but we wanted to check out a hotel avec chambres in La Roche L%26#39;Abeille and we needed to vist a garden the next morning. Otherwise we would have driven straight to the Dordogne in one day. Easy-peasy.

You might already have these, but there is a handy website http://www.tourisme.fr/recherche/e_index.htm which lets you find links to tourist information offices in France. I%26#39;ve never been, but Bourges looks worth a trip! If you%26#39;re looking for an overnight stop, a useful resource for hotels is http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/ which are more individual than the usual motorway junction type places.

Bourges is a pleasant town. Not small - population about 100,000 at a guess - with plenty of good restaurants and hotels.
The cathedral is worth going out of your way to see And not only for the magnificent stained glass.
