The problem of Hotel reviews

How do other users of this site assess the hotel reviews, I wonder? I ask because I was on the point of booking what appears to be nice budget hotel in the Bastille area, the Armstrong, having read some very good reviews, when on re-reading the reviews I found a couple that were quite contradictory and advised that the hotel was dirty and unappealing, and had [alledgedly!] misleading publicity too. What is one to make of this sort of thing?

I tend to go with the middle of the line majority and the tone. If the hotel did %26quot;everything%26quot; wrong then I%26#39;m guessing these are written by people who will be utterly unhappy with any hotel that isn%26#39;t exactly like what they have at home. I give a little more leeway on the positive end of things. I wrote a hotel review once and I%26#39;m sure I could have been more critical by non-european standards - it was an older building, didn%26#39;t have ultra-modern facilities and the rooms were small by comparison. But for me, the age of the building was part of the charm so I was willing to overlook these %26quot;failings.%26quot;

|||

I also try to see where the reviewer lives as different nationalities have different standards and points if view as to what is important. It is very hard and I%26#39;ve given up recommending places even to friends as one man%26#39;s meat is another%26#39;s poison!

I always check the hotels by googling them.

It looks to me like the reviewer who found the hotel appalingly dirty may have been in the wrong hotel - what Metro was he/she getting out at?

I am intruiged by the Canadians who double posted.. Any 2 star hotel in Paris was going to be hot this week. The weather was hot and 2 star hotels dont have airconditioning.

Overall, I look at the price - a hotel that has rooms promoted at $41and is listed on some pages as a hostel is never going to be the Ritz. On the other hand it is 2 star - so you know what kind of room it is going to be - small, but with a shower and WC.

Dirty? Well - you get there, check the room out before you book in- and if you dont like it you find another hotel. Go to tourist information, explain the predicament, and they will find another hotel (especially in July and August) and probably ask the Mairie to inspect.........

I use the %26#39;one in ten%26#39; rule. If the hotel has 9 great reviews for every one terrible one I start discounting the odd bad review. There is always someone that has a bad experience. Oddly, the one in ten people that complain a lot and find everyone rude don%26#39;t seem to have the ability to self reflect. Just an opinion.

I read the reviews carefully to see whether there are patterns. We stayed in June at the most wonderful small hotel on the right bank. had absolutely no fault to find with anything. Fantastic location and the most marvelous staff, etc. the few complaints were about the single rooms and/or the area for one person walking alone.

One of my friends was in a single on this trip and while small, found it attractive and comfortable.

So, some people may just accomodate better. Also, depending on how late at night and which cross street gets used, it may be busy or feel isolated.

We plan on absolutely returning to this hotel as we found everything to our liking and exactly as represented.

Sometimes you can tell by the e-mail exchanges with the hotel in terms of tone and promptness what you are getting.

Also cross checked Tripadvisor with some guide books, I trust.

I take a look at where the poster is from when I read a review. For instance, I live in New York and New Yorkers are pretty discriminating. I want to know what New Yorkers say about a particular hotel because their expecations from a hotel may be different from a European or even someone from another part of the U.S.

Some people are never happy with the hotel they stay in. So narrow down the choices to Location, a/c, price etc., then pick a couple of hotels that meet your basic requirements. Then you move on to T/A posts.

If after all of that you are still confused then ..... You guess, lol.

Reviews reflect the individuals experience as well as personalities. Many times people book rooms without first investigating the area, room size, etc. and then are dissappointed. I generally just use reviews to help confirm my choices, and mostly care about cleanliness since I am only in room to sleep.

I also always email hotels and ask if there is any work being done that would create noise or affect amenities while I am there before I reserve rooms. I have never have had a problem, and if I ever have a rude response, I will not reserve.
