Musée Nissim de Camondo

Thanks to LuckyLuc%26#39;s persistant nagging along with prodding from a few others, G %26amp; I spend a morning at the Musée de Nissim de Camondo. What a treat! The collections of 18th decorative arts is very nearly beyond compare. The items on view are the sorts of things one orinarily only sees behind glass or from 50 feet away at someplace like Versailles. This home has a rather intimate feel, and although each room is roped off, the ropes are perilously close to some very fine pieces. Truly, one could reach right out and touch many of the objects. This is particularly important to those of us who enjoy examining the variations of, say, water-gilding versus fire-gilding on a pair of bronze candlelabra. I also experienced a serious bout of %26quot;copper pot envy%26quot; when the tour ended in the mansion%26#39;s kitchen. Thankfully, I had already fed my habit with a visit to Dehillerin. The overall effect is quite stunning and the linkages to the family%26#39;s history very poignant. This is one of those %26quot;2nd string%26quot; museums that really needs to be visited more frequently. I%26#39;m sorry it took me so long to get there. Thanks, Lucky!

BRAVO! The ambiance at the Camondo is unique. Now you must do the Gustave Moreau, and spent hours at the estampes and dessins cabinets. I know so much to do, so little time.

See, I told you he%26#39;s persistent. He repeats himself over and over. He repeats himself over and over.

When we visited here, I was astounded by the incredible marble, stone and woodwork on the main stair case. Also was in awe of those stoves/ovens...Les cuisines de l%26#39;hotelCamondo... I could live with that any day. Another great bit was the upstairs main bathroom with huge tub, toilet in the closet and at the end of the tub: a gentleman%26#39;s pisseur. Such luxury.

As you are going to as you call it 2nd tier, have you visited Musee Bouchard? It is quite original and the sculptor%26#39;s son is very informative. Although only open Wednesday afternoons, this musee gives a different perspective than Rodin or Musee Antoine Bourdelle- which, by the way is like entering another century and is also a jewel.

Well, sorry, I am in the process of renting an apartment for 2 weeks during March 2007 and am already excited to return to Paris.

Since it was already established that I am repeating myself , I think that even people on their first visit to Paris should take 2 hours and enjoy something different that those “marathon”-museum that are le Louvre and le musée d’Orsay.

For that the Camondon can be visited not only for the splendid objects, but also for seeing the inside of a hotel particulier and experience the daily life at that time. Also one can see the time; effort and mountains of money Camondo spend on recreating an 18th century décor. And the film and the audio-guide reveal the poignant destiny of the family.

After the visit a little pique-nique in the nearby parc Monceau would make for a nice relaxing afternoon.

Hi Truffaut

That sounds really interesting. I haven%26#39;t been to any of these hotels particuliers - but I considered Musée Jaquemart-André. Which would you recommend: Nissim de Camondo or Jaquemart-André ?

Definitely Nissim de Camondo. The Jacquemart is more interesting architecturally and has better paintings, although it%26#39;s hard to see many of them well because of the way the rooms are roped off. The NdC has phenomenal furniture and decorative arts. From a curatorial point of view, the way in which the collections at NdC are presented is in a totally different league from the Jacquemart.

Thank you - will do next time

I am glad you enjoyed that museum, one of my favorite. Pity that it closes on mondays and tuesdays...

Did you enjoy the firemen %26#39; s ball on 14th July? I went to the one in Port Royal, it was great!

Raphy, after urging everybody else to go the bals, we didn%26#39;t go ourselves. We decided to have a relaxing evening of wandering around partying at random. Glad you finally got to experience one of the bals. It was such a disgrace that a nice young Parisienne hadn%26#39;t been to pay her respects to the pompiers.
