Dirving from Calvi (airport) to Piana on 6th August. Any advice on best route to take etc and approx how long the journey is?
Cheers

Really don%26#39;t think you have much choice unless you go a very long way out of your way. D81 all the way via Porto, but do read the contributions on the Corsica forum on the state of this road. About 84 kilometeres altogether, but very slow going after the first 15km or so. Allow at least 2.5 hours, but no-one goes to Corsica and tries to keep to artificial schedules. Relax and enjoy the scenery, and don%26#39;t look down!!

Gissie, I%26#39;ve just done that journey. About 70 km of Aaardvark%26#39;s 84 km are pleasant and winding with breathtaking views. The other 14 are the roadworks... very dusty, bad to drive on and all unmade-up road surface. Make sure your spare tyre is in good shape.
There is an alternative that will take you longer, but it will be just as picturesque. You could go via Ile Rousse, Ponte Leccia, Corte and Ajaccio. I know it%26#39;s a long way round, but if you hate roadworks, why not make a day of it and see a bit of the interior?
If I was in your shoes by the way, I%26#39;d still go via the coast road despite the roadworks. The views are a bit special and you%26#39;ll have an extra two hours at your destination (which you will love by the way).

Thanks for that!

There is an intermediate route, equally scenic, which doesn%26#39;t take you as far as Ajaccio but goes through Ile Rousse, Ponte Leccia etc but then goes over the top from before Corte to Porto. As far as I know there aren%26#39;t any road works on that road, but it is a stunning, if slow, drive, showing you the best of Corsican scenery and it won%26#39;t take as long as going round to Ajaccio. Take a right at Francardo, from the N193 onto the D84 via Calacuccia, the Col de Vergio(highest pass in Corsica) and Evisa, and you will see narrow gorges, high plains, , wild pigs and a stunning view down the Gorges de Spelunca before arriving in Porto. Stop off and take a walk at the top. Stop off and take a swim in mountain rock pools in the Foret d%26#39;Aitone. Have a fantastic traditional Corsican dinner in Ota. The only way to go at the moment, and not a bad road.

We drove this route but in reverse i.e. Porto to Calvi last September, it is a wonderfully scenic route but as you say quite a slow drive. We initially drove from Calvi to Porto on the coast road but due to the roadworks we returned to Calvi inland via Calacuccia, and given the option I would go for the inland route. There are some parts of the road with no guard rails and high drops but if you take it slowly you should be OK.

I am still of the opinion that the Scala di Santa Regina part of the D84 is far from ideal on one%26#39;s first day on Corsica.

Fair comment especially if you have had an early flight and are tired but really there is no answer to this Calvi - Piana route at the moment until the roadworks are completed and the road surface is improved. The D81 coast route is also twisty and turny between Galeria and Porto and not easy for the first time visitor. All I can say is take your time, keep stopping for breaks and enjoy the views - whichever route you decide to take.
