we will be in Villefranche sur mer for 2 days/3 nights in early september. We are arriving late afternoon from Annecy ( train) and departing mid morning to AIx en Provence ( by train). Does anyone have a realistic suggestion of what to see and do in the limited time. We will have our 19 year old daughter travelling with us. I thought Nice, Monaco, St Paul? and possibly antibes -

We regularly rent out our flat in Villefranche and the people who stayed there last week never left the village. However, if you want to spend two days travelling around, I would recommend one day for Nice and one day to Eze and Monaco. On the day in Nice you could also nip along to Antibes if you wish.
Nice centre is 8 mns by train or about 20 by bus. NIce to Antibes takes about 30 mns by train. On the other day I advise bus to Nice bus station, then bus to Eze (check bus times the previious day) which also takes about 20 mns. Then Eze to Monaco (about 15 mns) Finally back to Villefranche by train or bus. I much prefer Eze to St Paul which, in any case, is significantly harder to get to from Villefranche.
For train times see www.regionpaca.fr There is an advantage in travelling to Nice by bus in that it arrives in a much more interesting part of town.

Thanks LondonBob, great information. Its all about balancing running around to see things or trying to soak up the atmosphere. I agree if it were just my husband and myself I would just relax in Villefranche sur mer.
