Dollars of any use at all?

Traveling to Europe nowadays...is there any point to bring dollars? Presumably everyone wants euros, so dollars are of no use at flea markets, shops etc?

Thanks.

No there%26#39;s not.

What would us European do with dollars. I mean if we%26#39;re not going to the states later ?

|||

In Moldova or Belarus they would be of utility, but in France and all of the EU, you%26#39;ll be stared at !

|||

I have to ask...do Europeans show up with euros at flea markets and shops in Los Angeles? And would they be accepted there?

|||

No, Europeans do not show up with Euros at US flea markets to my knowledge.

Forgive my ignorance, but for most of my life (57 years), dollars were happily accepted in Europe and elsewhere - before the euro. I believe they are still worth something in some countries. In my recent trip to Southeast Asia dollars were preferred by shopkeepers. I did not mean to slight the European currency. In fact I envy its strength. We should only be so lucky.

km5, don%26#39;t worry, there was no sarcasm intended, but actually your question is quite sheer. In the past, before the euro, dollars could be accepted, but today, apart from oil (and even that one...) everything here is traded in euros or in the local currency.

The only parts of Europe where you could trade in dollars are Moldova, Belarus, and Russia, though for the latter the Euro is superseding the USD.

they are in general circulation as the currency of choice in Cambodia tourist sites -- but Europe? what would a European do with dollars? Would you local shop in the US take Euros? Pounds?

you can tuck a few 20s in your money belt as emergency back up =-- but they need to be changed for Euros to spend.

Even long before the Euro, dollars were not accepted in Europe, the days of the Marshall Plan are long gone. You would have been laughed at trying to pay with dollars in Germany or France, even in the 60s.

With an ATM card and a credit card or two, there%26#39;s no need to bring dollars. At the major flee markets, you%26#39;ll need euros, as many vendors do not accept credit cards.

I, personally, prefer to arrive with sufficient Euros for taxi fare/coffee/bottle of water, without having to locate an ATM at the airport and hope for no line or that my bank is not offline at the time of my requested withdrawal. We always return home with sufficient Euros (acquired at a much better exchange rate than at home) for starting our next visit.

If you were to find dollars accepted anywhere, it would surely be at a dismal exchange rate.

For those who prefer to be prepared for all contingencies, a few hundred dollar bills that can be exchanged in an emergency is a really good idea.
