stay in Bayeux or Caen

My husband and I will be travelling to Normandy from Paris in mid-October. We had planned to make Bayeux our base in Normandy, but possibly rent a car in Caen. Had planned to stay at the Hotel Churchill in Bayeux. Is it better to stay in Caen instead? Less tourists? If so, any hotel suggestions? Also, is returning the car to CDG instead of Caen a big hassle? Thanks!

Bayeux is, I think, a nicer place to stay; the main part of town is walkable, and there are some good restaurants in the center.

Rent your car in Caen and do some sightseeing there. Driving back to CDG would not be a big hassle, and you could do some sightseeing on the way if you plan one overnight stop somewhere. You could stay in the village of Petit Andelys at La Chaîne d%26#39;Or, a very pleasant hotel/restaurant on the banks of the Seine; it%26#39;s about a 2-hour drive from there to CDG.

No you would be better off staying in Bayeux and in mid-October there certainly won%26#39;t be many tourists about. It will also be a better based for visiting the US D-Day sites and beaches as Caen is at the eastern end of the beaches whereas Bayeux is just about at the start of the US stuff.
