Although I%26#39;m not a huge fan of churches I highly recommend a visit to Chartres to see the stained glass in the cathedral. It%26#39;s much lovelier and more impressive than any stained glass I saw in Paris.
Also Chartres is a lovely town which is quieter than urban Paris.
In Chartres we had lunch at Le Moulin de Ponceau 21-23 rue de Tanneire which is on the river which is down hill from the cathedral. 02 37 35 30 05 www. lemoulindeponceau.fr/ All three of us
agreed that the food was terrific and the view along the river was gorgeous. The prix fixe lunch was about 25E each which was expensive for us for lunch, but the quality of the food and the
excellent service made it worth the price. Use Mappy.com to map the location of the restaurant. It wasn%26#39;t really easy to locate.

Was it prettier than the stained glass at St. Chappelle?

The one tragedy of my Paris trip is that, due to various complications, I never got to St. Chappelle so I can%26#39;t say. My sister-in-law went to St. Chappelle and said it%26#39;s beautiful. The cathedral in Chartres is much bigger and the stained glass windows are among the oldest in France.
Seeing some of the countryside by train and seeing, briefly, the city of Chartres was an added bonus.

Nosara - Since you missed St. Chappelle, you%26#39;ll just have to take another trip to Paris.

Shoesy,
You%26#39;re right! Of course I have to go back. Even though we were there long enough to see almost every other museum and monument on our list there are some things we didn%26#39;t get to. I haven%26#39;t yet tried every kind of pastry in the patisseries. I also missed the gelato place near Berthillon. Never found frogs%26#39; legs on the menu in the restaurants we checked out. I might have to take a deep breath and spend more money for that meal.
since we were there in the spring I haven%26#39;t seen Paris in the summer, fall or winter. There are three more trips at the minimum.

I just got back from a month away, two weeks in France, but only one in Chartres, unfortunately. I had only about 12 hours there, and it was just not enough time to really explore the town and the amazing Cathedral. Most of the stained glass in the church is original, having been meticulously taken down during the war and hidden to protect it. Amazingly beautiful windows.
The town has many things to see, one a house and surround entirely made up of mosaics by a deceased owner...again, I could only guess at it due to time constraints. I want to go back! Beautiful small town, easy ride from Paris on the train. Church is better maintained than most I have seen in Paris, including Notre Dame.
