I%26#39;m planning to buy tickets for train travel in France (and into Italy) and am wondering if it is ok to buy them at sncf.com as a US citizen and print or pick up in France. The web site does not list the US as an allowed country (hence implicitly excluded?), yet a lot of people seem to be doing just that based on other web postings. Prices are much better than other web services. Can someone please clarify? Also, what is the bast way to handle ticket pick up? Thanks!

Say you%26#39;ll pick it up in France. Then save your confirmation number (you will need it) and pick them up at the train station.

Thanks DesAlpes -- I just re-read the fine print and I agree this should not be a problem -- have you successfully done this (ordered on the web site and pick up in France)?

I order my SNCF tickets over the phone and they arrive in the US mail a couple of weeks later.

Even better is to print your tickets at home. I typed up a guide on how to buy tickets on the sncf site. You can find the forum post here:

Let me know if you have any trouble.

Thank you, everyone -- I managed to navigate through both the sncf and Trenitalia sites after reading the information here, including your very detailed sncf informaton you pointed me to. Only issue was that the sleeper configurations I needed were not available, so I ended up going with raileurope.com...I was close, but could not quite get what I needed direct through the web site. It was fun trying though! Thanks again for all your input. By the way, went with the Excelsior class 2xsleeper, as it was only modestly more than 1st class double sleeper and this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Then I read that 1st class sleepers are larger. We do not really need the shower. Any opinions on which is better and more comfortable?

%26gt;%26gt;have you successfully done this (ordered on the web site and pick up in France)?%26lt;%26lt;
Yes. Though I lost my confirmation code and they weren%26#39;t going to give me my tickets. But my wife found it and all was well.

Dave,
Sorry you didnt manage to book over the net . Often to get the higher priced first class private rooms you have to call to book. The SNCF has an english speaking phone number where you can place your order. They will then mail the tickets to you in the US. If its not a done deal it might be worth a call as rail europe has heavy markups. Here%26#39;s the number: 011 33 8 92 35 35 39.
Have a great trip!
