Jackets

Okay okay...I know that this discussion has come up a number of times, but I really need an answer. How important is it to bring a jacket/tie with me to paris? I plan at eating at some nice restaurants (L%26#39;Atelier de Joël Robuchon, for example) but not the really expensive places like jules verne. Since I really don%26#39;t want to take a jacket in my small bag, is it REALLY needed?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Why pack your jacket? I always take a jacket with me, but most of the time I am either wearing it, or it is in the overhead locker on the plane. At the other times it is through the handles of my carry on. As I only take a carry on, the insides of the bag are more needed for other items.............. excluding ties. I think when the mercury hits 30 you%26#39;re excused ties (plus I wear my jacket over t-shirts, and tie and t-shirt is trying just that bit too much!)

Others will say don%26#39;t bother with a jacket, especially as it is so hot - but I always have one - it just doesnt seem right NOT to take one.

I%26#39;m with the Wiz, I always take a blue blazer. Tilley Endurables make a pricey but indispensible travel weight jacket that can be bath tub washed and hung to dry over night.

Lands%26#39; End also make a light weight jacket but I think it%26#39;s dry clean only.

I usually also buy a couple of shirts when I am in Paris. Doing laundry on holiday is such a drag so I only pack enough for about half the trip and then pick up a few when I am there.

It is not necessary to have a jacket at most restaurants, especially if you%26#39;re having lunch rather than dinner. Dressy slacks and a good quality shirt, immaculately cleaned and pressed will do the trick. The true sublety of Parisian fashion is that you can wear anything, and as long as it is worn with panache, you can get away with it. Only restaurants at the level of Taillevent might be the exception.

There is no restaurant in Paris, however %26quot;starry%26quot; it might be that will pull the very North American trick of demanding you wear a tie and propose you some nice 70s Vegas style specimen à la Nicholson in this movie, was it %26quot;As good as it gets%26quot; ? As Truffaut said, elegance is not a check list, some items might not be ticked, but you will still be more elegant than with a %26quot;Love boat%26quot; blazer and a polyester tie.

Actually, Jack Nicholson went out and bought his own suit jacket to wear to dinner in %26quot;As Good as it Gets.%26quot; (After declining the germy one from the 70s).

The trick is, if you arrive with a jacket, any guy can sit in any restaurant in a t-shirt.

Otherwise, unless you%26#39;re a well fit under 30, this option is procluded.

Yes, men in a jacket look better at those restaurants.

Don%26#39;t you want the woman who goes with you to dress up a little bit as well for special occasions?

Wear the jacket on the plane and problem will be solved.
