Myself and my girlfriend are shortly travelling to the Loire Valley for the first time. We are staying in Tours for 6 nights and are planning to hire a car to visit various Chateux and the surrounding towns (Blois, Chinon, Loches etc). Does anybody have any experience of doing the same? I would be really grateful for comments upon how practical it is, and, in particular, on what the parking situation is like in Tours.
Many thanks,
Jack

Does your hotel in Tours offer parking? Otherwise there are a number of city-operated pay carparks. Six nights will give you plenty of time to see the Loire Valley châteaux.

There are areas of Tours more convenient than others in getting in and out, but his is a sizable city with considerble traffic to contend with. Personally I would prefer a smaller town, Amboise for example, and would probably make one move over a six day period rather than having to go back and forth. That would depend upon what I planned on seeing.
Here%26#39;s a good source of info on the various chateaux:

The hotel does offer private parking, so we will probably take advantage of that. Now that the hotel is booked, we are stuck with Tours, but the plan is to rent a car for the week, use it for the further afield locations, but also hire bicycles for the more accessible attractions.
