Machine is easiest as there are often long queues at the ticket office. Villefranche to Monte is 2.30. Nice will be a few cents more.

Unless you hold a French Carte Bleu (unlikely but possible!) carry lots and lots of coins - the blue machines won%26#39;t take international credit cards or bank notes.
They are now even employing girls in SNCF red uniforms to %26quot;help%26quot; travellers queueing at the blue machines - tell them they are wasting their time if they havent got a CB or cash and to join the long queues at the desks..

If you are ready to plan your trip %26amp; be inflexible you can book %26amp; print your train tickets on line - www.sncf.com. But it could be at the price of flexibility. You may decide you don%26#39;t want to go to that place on that day after all...

The blue machines that dispense the tickets for local travel are very easy to use for anyone with even the most basic French, something which I am sure applies to anyone from Switzerland.

LondonBob - I get all smug over this as I hold a French Carte Blue against a French Euro Bank Account - so I breeze through ticket purchases at Nice Gare Ville. When it comes to me and the missus 2 returns to Ventimiglia 28 Euro - I feel sorry for the peeps that need to find 28 euro in coins - ridiculous.
I agree the machines are dead simple - with practice - but every time I%26#39;m in a queue I watch people fumbling along and then out comes the mastercard or visa card , and another aborted purchase. You want to get the graduates of the grande ecoles who populate the higher echelons of SNCF and basically give them a kick up the ...(continued on page three)
