Safety in Nice

Hi, I was wondering if it was safe for two young teenagers to go shopping during the day in Nice.

Thanks

Yes. Anyplace anywhere near the areas frequented by tourists is quite safe.

Greetings Gichelle,

As in any city with many tourists, you must be aware of some degree of petty crimes. If you%26#39;re carrying a back pack, do not keep valuables, ie: passport, credit cards, or cash in it, as it only is an invitation to be unzipped, by characters who prey on unaware folks in crowded surroundings. Only travel with copies of your passport. Keep the original in your hotel safe, or some secure place in your hotel room. If you%26#39;re carrying a shoulder bag, keep it slung across your shoulder, with the bag in front of you, not just hanging from one shoulder. These suggestions are not meant to build fear, but just to keep you aware that things could happen, and can truly have a negative effect on a vacation. There are too many horror stories, that are truly avoidable. Now, go and have a great time. Enjoy!

Hi

Funkster hs given you all the good advice you need as regards danger ie risk of the criminal variety

.

Having come back from a week in Nice this morning I was struck by the real danger people face in Nice - not crime, but fire. There are virtually no fire escapes on any of those beautiful buildings, and hardly a day has gone by this week without someone losing theirr lives in a fire. Smoke alarms are not mandatory and the French are quite %26quot;blase%26quot; (good French word) about the risk of fire.

Once you%26#39;ve finished dodging bullets on the Prom (only joking!) my first hand advice is always - when you settle down in wherever you are staying, just take a moment to answer a simple question: %26quot;How the blazes would I get out of here if I smelled smoke at 4.00am?%26quot;

The reason I recommend it was I didn%26#39;t give it a thought either - until it happened, and I didn%26#39;t have an answer.

Oh and the other thing to watch for if you go swimming are the swarms of jellyfish that have been multiplying in the very warm water of the Med in the recent heat. The sting is unpleasant but some people unknowingly have allergies and it can be nasty. The baywatch guards carry ammonium and other countermeasures to the sting

There - thats given you a whole load of new things to worry about..

Cheers! It is paradise, really!

I thought I would mention my experience whilst in Nice in September last year. My husband and I were walking along the Promenade in the evening and a motorcycle rode past us on the pavement and snatched a lady%26#39;s bag from behind and disappeared down a side street. No chance of catching him. I would recommend you either carry no bag, or put it right over your head so it cannot be slipped off.

The first thing we do in any hotel is check out the escape route in the event of an emergency. And in multi-story hotels we ask for a room no higher than the 6th floor, which is as far as most fire-truck ladders will reach.

One place to be careful of in Nice is the area right in front of the Banque de Paris across from Galeries Lafayette. That%26#39;s a spot that gypsies tend to use for assaulting people coming away from the ATMs. After you withdraw money, go straight inside the bank and put it safely away in a money belt.

Bag snatches tend not to make the news so you don%26#39;t hear or read of it except by experience.. Good advice, anywhere.

One suggestion further suggestion which works for me. When abroad I carry only one International credit card, which I%26#39;ve reduced the maximum credit limit from the many thousands the bank offered to only a few hundred euro%26#39;s. It serves my limited credit needs and is not much use to fraudsters in the event of ltheft. Peace of mind for online use too.

Times we live in.

Cheers
