My husband and I would like to visit the Provence at Christmas (Dec. 24-31), but we have concerns about restaurants, markets and other sights being closed. Do we have reason to be worried? Are there any hotels that are especially nice at that time of year?

We spent a week in Cannes over the Christmas period a couple of years ago. Cannot speak for inland Provence but on the coast everything appeared to be open as usual, except of course on Christmas Day itself, although many of the restaurant on La Croisette were open at lunchtime as normal. We had a superb meal at lunch time on Christmas Day at Hotel La Martinez.
The market in Cannes was open and busy on both 26 and 27 Dec.
Remember that in France traditionally the main meal at Christmas is on Christmas Eve. It would be a good idea to book in advance as you may find it difficult to find somewhere that is not fully booked if you are not arriving until the 24th.
