Just back from my first of hopefully many trips to Nice %26amp; would like to mention some tips/suggestions for first time visitors to the beautiful city of Nice.
If considering somewhere to base yourself in South East France then Nice is THE place.
Do not stay in a hotel more than 15 minutes walk from the beach.
Buses are scarcer than I thought %26amp; Nice is much bigger than it looks on a map. Indeed it is the 5 biggest city in France.
If staying for only a few days %26amp; you want to pack in a lot of sightseeing then consider (no do) Guided tours in minivan etc, rather than Train/Bus.
Open top bus is a must!
The locals hit the beaches early, 8am %26amp; earlier ! Youngsters there till late. 3/4AM.
Most have English %26amp; all are friendly lol.
Dinner time BEGINS around 11pm. Prices are pretty expensive so watch your finances.
I brought way too many shirts, jeans etc. Bring more t-shirts, shorts instead. And of course good walking shoes (sneakers) + decent baseball hat ,etc.
Casinos will not let you in without Passport ID %26amp; no shorts allowed.
Nice beach is pebble so be prepared with shoes, towels etc.
Be very careful crossing any street!
Get a street map of Nice.
Buy train tickets from counters not Computer terminals, as I found it unreliable %26amp; unclear. I know I am getting old but these ones fooled me lol.
Best places to visit are in no particular order are Cannes, Eze, St Paul De Vence,Monaco,Grasse for the perfume factory, Gourdon as long as you are not afraid of heights.
Not worth more than one visit, you guessed it - St Tropez.
I personally was not enamoured with my 30 minute stay in Ventimiglia but I accept that is highly dubious thing to state, but just my opinion.
Arrive at Nice Airport 2 hours before departure %26amp; check whether you are leaving via T1 or T2.
If wondering should you go in the 1st place then all I can say is YES YES YES ! Because you will go again once you have seen it. Bon Soir.
Oh one last thing has anyone left Nice saying they did not like the place ?

Well spoken,sir.
(Oh, Ventimiglia is a %26quot;shopping%26quot; thing. If you don%26#39;t do shopping, or dont want to stock up with cheap cigarettes and alcohol, its not really for you)
Cheers

Hi there Dublin - a fellow country-woman here!
You said: %26quot;If staying for only a few days %26amp; you want to pack in a lot of sightseeing then consider (no do) Guided tours in minivan etc, rather than Train/Bus.%26quot;
Which tour company etc., do you recommend? Were there any which struck you as better/worse than others? I am travelling with a child and a husband who%26#39;ve never been to Nice before and I%26#39;m in charge of arrangements and which them to be as sleek as possible!
You%26#39;re right, Nice is superb! I haven%26#39;t been there for years, but love it enough to take my family there.

Hello Ms Kinsale,
I have some brochures etc I can send you if you want. Including the tour company I went on. Bus %26amp; trains are time consuming, especially compared to the trips I went on. These guys pick you up from your hotel front door.No messing waiting for trains, no delays etc, What more could you want - a/c they have that as well lol.
One tip though is bring Water, pretty hot there, although just as hot here at the moment.
I am sure most hotels in Nice would provide these but no problem sending them to you. As sadly it will be a year or two before I can go again, unless for my future honeymoon.
My email is johnoneill18@eircom.net.
