Do I need my passport on short trip to Italy?

I%26#39;m off to Nice in the next few weeks and I%26#39;ll be following the advice of many on this forum by taking a day trip into Italy. Will I need my passport if I do this?

This topic may have been covered elsewhere on the Forum so i%26#39;d be obliged if someone can point me in the right direction if it has.

Much thanks in anticipation of a swift and helpful reply

Paul

In both France and Italy, you are supposed to be always carry a valid ID, this can be either an national ID card (all europeans have one) or a passport, even when not crossing a border.

While there a no immigration controls anymore between France and Italy there are still random custom controls (especially when to enter France coming from Ventimiglia (remnants from the counterfeit designer goods smuggling period)

To make it short ; YES

|||

Quite right - carry it.

Though there are no formal border controls I have noticed quite a high security police presence at Ventimiglia - especially when there have been high profile terror incidents. You may recall one of our failed London bombers rushed off to Italy.

There are a lot of people with varied backgrounds who hold EU pasports nowadays, and the Ventimiglia police do seem to target anyone %26quot;who looks different%26quot;. I%26#39;d say from your TA photo Horace, big staring eyes, it might be wise

Greetings Paul,

One more suggestion. If you%26#39;re making a day trip, and going to carry your passport, make a copy of it, and carry the copy rather than the original. Keep the original in the safe in your Hotel or wherever you%26#39;re staying. The copy can be used for identification wherever you travel. Enjoy.

N, not in Europe, a passport%26#39;s photocopy has even less legal value than a library card.

You have to carry a VALID ID.

Maybe I%26#39;m just an honest faced American, but I%26#39;ve never had a problem carrying a copy of my Passport when visiting Italy, but I did have a problem taking out a library book with it!.

I am not though familiar with requirements for European citizens travelling, so you probably have a good point.

Does a driving license class as valid ID?

The copy ofa passport may be used for instance in stores when they ask for ID because you are paying with a foreign credit card. Never had a problem showing a copy I carry around in my wallet. And if they refuse it I have my driver%26#39;s license with my picture on it.

As for the International Driver%26#39;s License, it is not needed in France, your local licence will do. But if you intend to drive in Italy (or Spain) you definitely need an International Driver%26#39;s Licence. AAA (or CAA in Canada) will issue that licence for around 45$ CDN (should be around $40 US). All you need are 2 passport format pictures and a form to fill out. The licemce is good for a year from its date of issue.

In France and Italy :

it is acceped (tolerated) as an ID in stores and such places (museums, ...).

but it is not considered valid in case of a customs or police control or for a domestic flight

That is incorrect.
