Are the tramworks finished?

We were in Nice last August and the whole of Jean Medecin and surrounding area was carved up with the Tramworks.

We%26#39;re visiting again this August, are the works complete yet?

It would be nice to do some shopping without all the building works cramping up all the pedestrian traffic.

They were not in March but they were getting closer to installing the rails (that has been done close to Place Masséna and the MAMAC)

As yymca noted. the holes in the road have mostly gone and the rails are beginning to be set The trams wont be fully functioning until later next year - Place Massena is promised to be restored fully pedestrianised for Summer 2007.

FAQ: Quelle sera la durée des travaux ?

La fin des travaux est prévue pour l%26#39;été 2007.....l%26#39;ouverture du tramway au public fin 2007.

The latest row is over the overhead power.supply. The residents have twigged there has to be suspended power cable along the route - for some, outside their windows! Thanks to the tram%26#39;s on-board battery-power the main square Place Massena and Place Garribaldi will be spared overhead cabling. Phew! -

The whole project is becoming unpopular for the Maire, so as a diversion a NEW project has been announced - a second Port next to the airport, and the promise of TGV from Paris by 2012. Dont you just love politicians?

It really doesnt prevent anyone shopping or getting about and its mainly just a few streets in the central area - the worst is well over.

Greetings HoraceMorris,

Although much of the initial track work has been laid, the entire completion of the project will extent til 2008 not 2007 when the full aesthetics of the Medecin will be returned to what it was previously. This will of course be the replacing of the trees, and streetwork to accommodate both pedestrians and cars. This will extend beyond the Medecin to the Avenue Malaussena and above. Not to mention the Avenue Faure which is as well, pretty chewed up. It%26#39;s supposed to alleviate traffic, but that remains to be seen. Speaking to the locals, there are as many for it as against it. Shopping goes on though, and having known the Medecin when it was truly a beautiful

Boulevard, I%26#39;m curious also how it will be a benefit.

I find Jean Medecin and other streets where construction is taking place much more pleasant with the tram works than it was before with traffic and diesel fumes. I believe that the entire system is due for completion in 2012, so I look forward to it being finished in about 2016, by which time I suspect that all motor traffic will be banned from the centre of the city. I have written to the mayor suggesting that the Promenade Des Anglais should be pedestrianised long before that.

LOL! That would be under President Dominique de Villepin would it?

With unemployment at 9% in France, it would make more sense to save on electricity and require those able-bodied unemployed to push the trams between stops, in relays, thus providing healthy excercise for them at no cost. and cutting pollution.

2012 is when the bullet trains arrive - so why not run them through Nice instead of trams, cutting the cross town journey from twenty minutes to about ooh 30 seconds.

When the silver birch reappear in Jean Medecin, I shall open my best bottle to celebrate!

Thanks to all who have taken the time to post.

I was hoping to be able to enjoy strolling along Medecin this year without being pushed into a builders skip!

Never mind.

Thanks again

Horace

Sorry to say, the centre looks like Beirut! Stay in nearby Villefranche-sur-Mer (6kms) and shop in Menton, Ventimille (Friday Market), Antibes or Cannes.
