Day Trip from Nice to Italy

I know this general topic has been posted in the past, but I didn%26#39;t see specific answers to my questions, so if they%26#39;re out there, please let me know instead.

My soon to be wife and I will be travelling from Chicago to Nice and staying there from Monday afternoon to Saturday morning before heading to Barcelona. We would like to take a day trip to somewhere in Italy and it appears from other posts this is possible. I was wondering what the best places to vist would be if we had only one day there, and we would rather not rent a car, so what trains we would take to get to these places, and approximate costs. Thanks in advance.

The furthest practical distance for a day trip to Italy from Nice by train is Genoa. The round trip including reservations is 35 euro a head and involves a change at Ventimiglia. There is one outgoing train from Nice around 8am gets you into Genoa at around 11am, and a return at about 5pm gets you back into Nice direct no change required at around 8pm. Gives you six hours there to explore.

Any further and the travel time vs explore time gets increasingly unattractive. With Trenitalia you virtually have to book a reserved ticket which you should do the day before you travel at Nice Gare Ville - allow up to 40 minutes wait to get served!

Lesser cities on the way are Ventimiglia, San Remo, Imperia, Savona and Albenga,. Because its only around ten minutes by train fom Ventimiglia (the border town) San Remo is an easy and interesting excursion into Liguria. Or you can just settle for Ventimiglia fo shopping and lunch (14 euro return)

All from Nice Gare Ville. Its a great day out, especially if you like Italian food.
