Best restaurant in Cannes

I%26#39;m going to Cannes next week - what is the best restaurant there? Not the most expensive, just the classiest.

Thanks!

Hello

JerseyBean -

or is it going to change to CannesBean ( Havebeen or Hasbeen) ?!

Seriously, it all depends what you qualify as being class.

Some of the best restuarants in Cannes could be considered to be

in hotels like the Martinez , Majestic on the Croisette for example.

The Noga-Hilton now rebaptised the Stéphanie ( ! ) too,

also has a good restaurant called the Scala , which is on the first floor with its terrace(large)in the tips of the palm trees .

But there again , you might hate hotel restaurants .

It is very much a question of taste .

But , is this what you call class , or a smaller style restaurant ?

Restaurants abound in Cannes.

Possibly , some of the best , classiest restaurants

in the Cannes area are on the edge of Cannes such as in Mougins, Golfe Juan, Juan les Pins and La Napoule.

Is a beach restaurant that is great and classy for lunch going to be a classy restaurant for dinner. ?

Sorry to be vague - but what turns you on?

Do you want it to be a restaurant where your children would be happy too or what ?

Happy hunting.

Fair point alain - not a hotel restaurant and not a family restaurant - maybe on the beach or in the hills, great cooking, small, terroir.

|||

I%26#39;d suggest heading for the hill town of Mougins, about 15 minutes above Cannes once you get up to the motorway. Our favorite restaurant there is Le Feu Follet, which has excellent food at moderate prices. Reserve a table on the terrace. Mougins is a classy place; so that requirement should be met.

Re THE restaurant ...

Underhill HI

re the Feu Follet in Mougins

have you been since it changed hands ?

It is now owned by a famous and successful French comedian called Jean-Marie Bigard...

The previous set-up was very reasonable - the prices and style have changed a bit since .

People I know that have been said it was fine.

Thanks JB

One hesitates to jump and name in one restaurant , it is like looking

at art work such as paintings , in French they say %26quot; ah les goûts et les couleurs %26quot; ..; there is no acounting for various tastes and one%26#39;s appreciation of colours ....

Anyway , and to get a move on to give you something to chew upon - at least until you get to have this famous meal -

since you are staying in Cannes - why not stroll up the Rue Saint Antoine , which is the street that goes up the heart of the historical centre of le Suquet , Cannes%26#39; oldest quartier ( area). This starts at the main bus station /town hall area ( or if you wish on the side of the main market - the Marché Forville.

There are about 30 restaurants there , on either side of the road.

Make sure that it is air-conditioned - you might prefer to eat inside in the sense that some of them have intimate atmospheres rather than be on the road on a table that is balanced on a very narrow bit of pavement .

With folk going up and down the street constantly, you might feel like animals in a zoo at feeding time while sitting eating your meal if you chose to reserve an outside table , otherwise !

One restaurant that has existed for at least 35 years is Le Maschou, which is nearly half way up the hill on the left.

This is constant .

But as I say , why not investigate them in the day time and the evening , you can pretext a visit to the Suquet Church at the top without letting on that you are looking for your restaurant , if is to be a secret ?The Church has a square on the side of it ,with the Castre Museum. The views of the Bay of Cannes and the town are

excellent. in the day and by night.

Opposite the Church entrance, go up the steps to the parapet wall for different views of the town as well as of the Bay towards La Napoule/Théoule.

There are classical music concerts on this same square every other night from 18th to 30th July, 2006 so best to avoid the squre in the evening unless you want to listen to the music ... BUT the seats should be reserved and are charged for.

They attract a big crowd.

Another thing, on 14th July , there is a big firework show to music on the water in the Bay of Cannes - la Fête Nationale -

starting normally at 10P.M.

The restaurants on the beach side of the Croisette tend to do a set menu on firework evenings- the prices are not cheap. Try checking out the Grand Hotel , which is centrally positioned or some of the privately run beach operations maybe as opposed to going for the other major hotel beaches in relation to finding a more reasonable meal.

The fireworks are fabulous.

HI Monsieur JerseyBean

Please my email for %26quot;onward %26quot; sent today on the Cannes Forum

- entitled %26quot; Merci Beach Dwellers %26quot;

I mention another restaurant at the Palm Beach end of town.

Thundering right now - but no rain for the moment.

oh ... some friends of mine that I saw today recommend the Gavroche in the Rue Saint Antione in the Suquet part of Cannes too..

it is just a bit higher up on the same side as Le Machou.

When do you arrive ?

Best

alanwelch,

Thanks very much for the tip on the change in ownership of Le Feu Follet--drat! We really loved that restaurant just as it was. Seems to be a bad year for our favorites, as La Table de Mon Moulin in Le Rouret closed. We loved the chef there--Jean-Pierre Silva--since his early days in Burgundy and are sad that we will have no more of his delicious meals.

Suggestions for an alternative to Le Feu Follet?

Le Voilier (61 La Croisette) is classy in that the food is consistently good and the service always friendly, and it%26#39;s moderately priced. We go for both lunch and dinner; a minimum of 3-4 times a week.

Whatever you do, do not go to 72 Croisette (opposite The Martinez). It%26#39;s great for people watching and drinks, but the worst food. We gave it another go this year, thinking there might have been improvement but no such luck.

The search for restuarants goes on...

Dear Underhill

( and are I add Overdale ...? these forums seem to be very sober sometimes and after some thunder and some very welcome rain for a short time, Cannes is feeling fresher and the air is cooler , so one is allowed to feel a little flippant - is one ? ! ).

Re. the Feu Follet , was the chef and owner and his wife , the son-in -law of Monsieur Surmain of the former Relais de Mougins opposite ? If so , we are on the same wave length - as I said previously, the ne owner is Jean - Marie Bigard, the French comedian .

The team he has put in meet with approval and the atmosphere of the restaurant is appreciated too. So , perhaps , you might like it even more now !

In Mougins Village , further along

the street , there is one called La Table d%26#39;Edouard which people like - have you tried that already ?

If you knew

ithe Broche de Fer - in Mougins on the road that later branches off to Valbonne and Sophia Antipolis - there has been a change of proprietor since January 2006 . The restaurant used to be called the Brocherie de Mougins/ St. Basile over 30 years ago - and was very in in those days.

If you go further afield , in Aups in the Haut Var, try the Restaurant des Gourmets in the village

- the restaurant has very basic décor but the chef is brilliant for the price of his menus /quality and standard of the cuisine. His wife is in the salle - Monsieur et Madame Surbach .

It merits a Michelin star.

7 kms further on from Aups is the Calalou Hotel in Moissac Bellevue-

with a marvellous terrace and good food. This hotel /restaurant is run by a charming Belgian family. Very civilised.

IN Cannes, for a beach restaurant on the Boulevard du Midi, the

Maeva , which is in its second year , is very %26quot;in%26quot; , opens for dinner as well, and have even dj%26#39;s during the day !

In Le Cannet , which is just behind Cannes ( I add this comment for those who are not familiar with it ) , there are new owners in a small restaurant on Place Bellevue - the square with a view... ! -

which is above the attractive Town Hall / La Mairie. Le Coin des Gourmets has not been in existence for even a year , but has a solid reputation already with the Cannetans, who are not known for being the most easy of clients. The restaurant

is on the first floor ,the kitchen somewhat open-plan on the ground floor - spotlessly clean and the food is very good and reasonable.

Walk up to it from the Place du Terminus/Place Leclerc and you will see the rehabilitation of Rue Saint Sauveur - with several artisans. Meander back down to the Town Hall throught the narrow streets - lots of charm , and yet so near to Cannes.

There are about 6 restaurants in close proximity including a n Asian one.

Bonsoir et bonne nuit.
