"Paris je t'aime", the movie

Finally, I went to see the long awaited %26quot;Paris je t%26#39;aime movie%26quot;, actually a succession of 18 5 mn fiction features taking place in different areas of Paris. The directors come from all walks of life, including Gus Van Sant, Alexander Payne, the Cohen brothers, Isabel Coixet, Olivier Assayas, Gérard Depardieu, etc. I don%26#39;t know whether it%26#39;s been released in the States yet, but all Parisophiles on this board should rush and see it as soon as it is out, don%26#39;t forget your tissue box though! This movie is a fine collection of classic Paris sights (Eiffel Tower, banks of the Seine, Père Lachaise), but mostly less known quartier vignettes such as the area around porte Saint Denis, place des petits Pères, Chinatown in the 13th, the awful place des Fêtes in the 19th, marché des Enfants rouges, etc. And the stories are all centered on... love of course, at all ages, between all sexes and nationalities. American tourists are quite present as characters, especially in the hilarious Coen brothers installment. Many of the US based regulars on this board will recognise themselves in the character depicted in the last short feature by Alexander Payne (%26quot;Sideways%26quot;), centered on the 14th arrondissement and the bitter sweet assessment of this tourist%26#39;s life so far, in the light of her Paris visit.

Just back and loved it - not just the air conditioning in the cinema ;-)

Didn%26#39;t like (understand?) the Chinatown sequence but loved the blind guy with Portman as his girlfriend and the scene in the Marais. Bob Hoskins was great and Steve Buscemi%26#39;s phrasebook was just clasic !

Oh and the vampires !

Loved the film. I just saw it yesterday sitting in one of the wonderful %26quot;love seats%26quot; in the Cinema Biblioteque with the woman i love.

Even the piece that was played by mimes (7e) was great ;-). We thought the place des Fêtes piece was particularly moving.

I have to admit it was our third film for the day because it is REALLY HOT RIGHT NOW IN PARIS and cinemas are a great escape for both of the obvious reasons. We usually only see one film a week (19euro for 2) but we spent more than 60euro yesterday. I do recommend the film and I hope they release it in the states.

metromole you should pick up a 5-place cinema card as the places are only €6 per person I believe.

If you have a FNAC card you get a discount at the 2 Gaumont on Blvd des Italiens.

I also enjoyed %26quot;Paris je t%26#39;aime%26quot; except for 2: the vampires and Juliette Binoche and the Cow boy.

Here is my question... why so much English? Is Paris really that aglicized, or was it a joint project? Just wondering if any of you knew.

Now back to the need for A/C, any of you know if Tournage dans un Jardin Anglais is any good? thx!

Bob, curious to know if it is in French or English and shown in V.O. My french is a bit weak, but I%26#39;d love to see the movie as I%26#39;m in Paris now as well and as you know it%26#39;s hot hot hot..and it%26#39;d be great to catch it in an air conditioned theater!

Hi Bluesky,

I saw it yesterday in Les Halles and can really recommend it! It%26#39;s really a multilingual movie: there%26#39;s French, English and a few other languages.

Given that this is France, all the bits spoken in non-French are subtitled in French, while the bits in French are not subtitled. So if you don%26#39;t know any French, I recommend you skip it until you get home.

phread, I suspect the %26quot;more than usual%26quot; anglophone dialogue is due to the co production structure, and the need to sell it more easily abroad. Also bear in mind that most of the directors involved are not French, so English is also a reflection of a certain international vision of Paris I guess.
